Comparison Isn't Cool

"Make a careful exploration of who you are and the work you have been given, and then sink yourself into that. Don’t be impressed with yourself. Don’t compare yourself with others. Each of you must take responsibility for doing the creative best you can with your own life. - Galatians 6:4-5 (MSG)

When I first started my business, I was excited to just get direction from God and GO. As time went on, I began to look at how other entrepreneurs were doing things and for some reason, I felt like I needed to change what I was doing to fit their model. But, I struggled trying to navigate the frustration of figuring out what box I fit in. God began to show me that I didn't fit in a box. He showed me how I was made for MORE and instructed me to keep going after everything He had for me. It didn't matter if anyone else was doing it like me and it didn't matter if anyone else approved of what or how I was doing it. Once I truly unsubscribed from comparison and fully engaged with my unique assignment. Things took off!

Today's blog is an invitation to explore why comparison isn’t just uncool—it’s counterproductive to our spiritual growth and personal development.

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” – Ephesians 2:10 (NIV)

This verse reminds us that we are individually crafted by God, each with a unique set of good works to accomplish. When we compare our journey to others, we overlook the beautiful path God has laid specifically for us, diminishing the value of His plans for our lives.

Here's the deal: Comparison steals the joy of witnessing God’s blessings and His work in our own lives. It blinds us to our achievements and God’s provisions because we’re too focused on what others have. Comparison is the root of discontentment. Constantly measuring our lives against others can lead to a constant state of dissatisfaction. This discontent distances us from appreciating the present and recognizing God’s presence in our journey.

Instead of comparing, celebrate. Celebrate your unique journey and embrace your individuality. God didn’t create us to live someone else’s life; He created us beautifully and wonderfully unique (Psalm 139:14). Embracing our individuality means recognizing that our differences reflect the multifaceted beauty of God’s creation.

I want to encourage you to acknowledging God’s plan. Trusting in God’s plan means understanding that He has a timeline for you that’s incomparable to anyone else’s. What He has in store for you is designed to flourish in His timing, not someone else’s.

Here are some practical things you can implement to help you get off the hamster wheel of comparison:

1) Gratitude Practice: Start and end your day by listing three things you’re grateful for in your own life. This shifts the focus from what you lack to what you have, fostering contentment and joy.

2) Limit Social Media: Be intentional about your social media use. Limiting time spent on platforms that trigger comparison can help maintain focus on your own journey and worth in Christ. This is one of the reasons why I love having an online community on a private platform that's not on social media. Shout out to the Live Love Lead Community. LOL

3) Be intentional: Take time this week to compliment or celebrate someone else’s success without letting it reflect on your value or journey.

4) Spend time in prayer: Ask God to help you see your life and journey through His eyes.

In those moments when you feel tempted to compare, remind yourself of God’s unique plan for you. He loves you dearly and with His help we will love ourselves better. Let's pray!

Dear God, thank you for creating us with beauty. Help us to recognize when the world is pressuring us to compare and measure our worth against others. Give us the strength to resist. Help us to see ourselves through Your eyes—fearfully and wonderfully made, each with a unique purpose and path. Help us to get a greater revelation of our value coming from You alone. We make the quality decision to celebrate the journey You’ve laid out for us. Today we find contentment in Your plans as our hearts overflow with gratitude for the many blessings You have given us. We honor you with each step of obedience. In Jesus' name, Amen.
