Dinner Difficulties

So...my family is sorta...difficult....I mean...super simple when it comes to dinner. Well, truth is...I don't know how to describe it. But, I'll give it a try.

Where do I begin? First, my family eats the same 5 dishes on a rotation. Literally, the SAME FIVE DISHES. Some would view that as wonderful. Meal planning is a cinch. Grocery list doesn't change. What more could a mom ask for? If ONLY it were that simple.

You see, my family is pretty picky and their tongues are somewhat super human. It seems like they can taste every ingredient in each dish. As I'm walking down the aisle of the grocery, my prayer is: "Lord, please don't let them be out of the brand I normally buy." Ya'll, I can make a dish the exact same way I make it every time, except I used a different brand of one ingredient, and my family calls me out on it. I'm like...seriously. It's crazy.

Another thing, of the 5 dishes, only 3 of them is something that EVERYONE in the family likes. Which means, if I cook one of the other two dishes, I'm figuring out what the other one or two people are going to eat that night.

If I am ever brave enough to try a new dish, it usually results in me cooking two meals because no one liked the new meal. I've learned that my family does not eat casseroles, crock pot meals, or soup. Yes, I know what you're thinking. Trust me, I'm thinking the SAME thing.

I wonder if we act this way with God. Are we stuck doing the same thing, in our same comfortable routine? If He leads us to something new, do we turn our nose up because it's not what we're use to? I wonder how many wonderful things God planned for us to enjoy, but we decided to stay in our routine, crossing the same five spiritual things off of our list each week, and missed out on a blessing.

I want to challenge you. Embrace the thing God wants to do in you. Embrace the thing God wants to do through you. Don't settle for routine or comfort. Be bold and say YES, even when you aren't familiar with all the ingredients.

"See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland." Isaiah 43:19 NIV
