Planning for Personal Growth

When it comes to personal growth and development, it's my jam! When I read or listen to a podcast, it most definitely is something that will make me a better person or help me take steps toward fulfilling my God-given purpose. Even when I set goals for myself, I have to ask myself if I need to develop in order to achieve them. I don't think many people think about that part. Setting goals is only half the battle; having a plan for personal growth is just as important.

In this blog post, I am going to unpack the importance of personal growth and development, why setting goals is not enough, and how to start your personal growth journey from a Christian faith perspective.

Why is personal growth and development important?

I honestly believe that personal growth and development are super important because it helps us to achieve our full potential. Growth helps us to improve our relationships, develop new skills, and gain a deeper understanding of ourselves and our God-given purpose. Personal growth and development can lead to greater happiness, fulfillment, and helps us to stay in alignment with what God has for us. As we strive to grow and improve, we can live a more meaningful and impactful life.

Why setting goals is not enough?

Setting goals is a big part of personal growth and development, but it is not enough. Many people set goals without considering their personal development needs, which can hinder their ability to achieve those goals. For example, setting a goal to start a successful business may require specific skills such as financial management, marketing, and leadership. Without the necessary personal development, it can be challenging to achieve that goal.

When I look at the person that I was when I started my business and who I am today, I see that I have grown leaps and bounds. Each time I invested in myself, I saw my business grow and increase in success. Some people have goals and they don't start going after them because they don't feel developed enough. That may be true, but don't let that stop you. No one has arrived. To achieve our goals, we must commit to a journey of personal growth.

How to start a personal growth journey?

Starting a personal growth journey can be challenging, but it's worth the work! Here is what you need to get started:

1) Self-Reflection: Start by reflecting on your life and your goals. Consider your strengths, weaknesses, passions, and purpose. Pray and seek God's guidance in this process.

2) Identify Areas for Improvement: Identify areas of your life where you need to grow and develop. This could be your professional skills, relationships, health, or in your faith-walk.

3) Develop a Plan: Create a plan for personal growth that outlines the steps you need to take to achieve your goals. This could include hiring a coach, seeking a mentor, enrolling in courses, attending workshops, reading books, or joining networking communities.

4) Take Action: Take action towards your goals. Follow your plan and take consistent steps toward your personal growth and development.

5) Evaluate Your Progress: Regularly evaluate your progress and make adjustments to your plan as needed. Celebrate your successes and learn from your failures. I always say, give yourself permission to fail. To me, failure is like fertilizer. It stinks, but you need it to grow.

As Christ followers, we believe that our personal growth and development are intimately tied to our relationship with God. Through prayer and seeking guidance from the Holy Spirit, we can identify areas for improvement and develop a plan for personal growth that aligns with God's will for our lives. We can trust that God will provide us with the strength and wisdom we need to achieve our goals and fulfill our purpose.
