Understanding Your Digital Footprint and Its Importance

Jun 08, 2023

Proverbs 13:22 (ESV) - "A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children, but the sinner's wealth is laid up for the righteous."

Have you ever thought about your legacy, not just in terms of wealth or material possessions, but also the spiritual legacy you can leave behind? In today's digital world, this includes your digital footprint. A footprint that can be a light and show others a path to follow.

Our digital footprint is the trace we leave in the digital space with every post, comment, photo, video, podcast, etc. It's like our signature in this online world, and it speaks volumes about who we are, what we believe in, and how we choose to interact with others. It is the mirror of our personal or business brand in the digital space, reflecting our values, vision, and the value we offer.

As a Christian female author, speaking, and coach, I believe that we have a unique responsibility and opportunity. It is not just about building a business; it includes crafting a ministry that aligns with your faith and impacts the world positively. It’s a journey where you don’t just attract customers; you build relationships, create a community, and leave a legacy. Your digital footprint is a significant part of this journey.

The first step toward a digital presence that attracts AND resonates with your target audience is understanding your current digital footprint. What story is it telling about you and your business? Is it aligned with your Christian values? Is it reflecting the Christ-centered brand you desire to build? Let's begin by taking these action steps.

Action Step 1: Reflect on your current digital footprint.
Take a moment to look at your social media accounts, your website, your comments, and even your emails. What message are they collectively sending out to the world? Is it one of compassion, strength, integrity, and faith?

"Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the LORD." (Lamentations 3:40)

Action Step 2: Identify areas of alignment and misalignment with your faith and values.
Once you've taken a comprehensive look at your current digital footprint, identify which parts align with your Christ-centered beliefs and which parts may not. There is no judgment here, just the grace-filled realization of what can be improved upon.

"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will." (Romans 12:2)

Action Step 3: Draft a vision of what you want your digital footprint to look like.
Think about how you can better align your digital footprint with your faith, your purpose, and your business. Can you inject more of your Christ-centered values into your posts? Could your brand message better reflect the transformative work Christ is doing in your life and your business?

"Where there is no vision, the people perish..." (Proverbs 29:18)

Also remember that you are a LIGHT! You have been chosen to do good works, according to Ephesians 2:10. Your business, your brand, is a part of these good works. It's an extension of your ministry. I encourage you to use the digital space you have been given to let your light shine brightly, so that through you, others may be led to Him.
