What If I'm Called to Both the Ministry and the Marketplace?

What if I'm called to both the ministry and the marketplace? This is a question that many have asked me. My immediate response is: If you are called to both, then do both. The world has tried to put us in a box in this regard. We have felt torn between the two and unsure of how to reconcile our calling to serve God in ministry with our desire to work in the marketplace. I have good news: it is possible to do both. I will take it a step further. If you are called to do both, you have a responsibility to do both. It does not have to be an either-or situation.

We serve a big God, He can use us wherever and how ever He chooses. As we are in ministry and the marketplace, we have a unique opportunity to serve God and bring glory to Him through our work. In fact, there are many examples in the Bible of people who served God in both ministry and the marketplace, including Paul, who was a tentmaker, and Lydia, who was a businesswoman. Let's not forget that Jesus was a carpenter. In addition, I myself am a real life example, lol.

So, just in case you are new to me or new to this community, let me share how God is using me in both the ministry and the marketplace. I am a digital media coach and business strategist for Kingdom entrepreneurs. I own a digital media production agency. I am the founder of Live Love Lead Media, a company that equips Kingdom-minded women to live, love, and lead well in life and business. I am a faith-based community builder for women and my husband and I planted a church a little over 6 years ago. I write devotionals, host an inspirational podcast, and speak at churches, conferences, and retreats.

I struggled for years trying to fit what I do in a box. I bought in to the lie that I could only do one thing. I was concerned about confusing my audience. But, I know that God is not the author of confusion. He wouldn't put these desires on my heart for me to be confused or to cause confusion. He put these desires on my heart because there are people I am called to reach.

It is the same for you. There are people that you are called to reach, but in order to reach them you are going to have to fully embrace all the gifts that God has put on the inside of you. It wasn't until I embraced all of my gifts that I was able to show up in the fullest expression of who God created me to be. And now that I have shown up in this fullest expression, I refuse to show up as anything less.

I want to encourage you today to get excited about where God has you. I know it can feel like you are birthing spiritual twins at times. But, you can do it! I am reminded of the account in scripture when Rebekah had twins.

Genesis 25:21-26 (NIV) - "Isaac prayed to the Lord on behalf of his wife, because she was childless. The Lord answered his prayer, and his wife Rebekah became pregnant. The babies jostled each other within her, and she said, “Why is this happening to me?” So she went to inquire of the LordThe Lord said to her, “Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger.” When the time came for her to give birth, there were twin boys in her womb. The first to come out was red, and his whole body was like a hairy garment; so they named him Esau. After this, his brother came out, with his hand grasping Esau’s heel; so he was named Jacob."

These two boys had different personalities and different assignments on their life. Yet, they were both necessary. Just like your call to the ministry and the marketplace serve people in different ways, both assignments are necessary. The difference is that your assignments don't have to contend with each other. God's design is not for these two assignments to compete and fight. His design isn't for one to stay hidden in the background. He called you to the ministry and the marketplace because He designed you to fully operate in both. From experience, I can truly say that walking in ALL that God has for you is the only way to fulfill your God-given purpose.

So as you create your media, know that you can create media to build your marketplace brand and your ministry brand. Get excited about it. Because of your obedience, lives will be changed and people will be reached.
