"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." — Matthew 11:28 (NIV)
As a wife, mom, pastor, community leader, business owner, and mentor, I have come to realize that self-care is vital. And yes, I feel like a broken record these days as I am talking about it constantly. But, this record is worth repeating. Why? Because I have had many conversations with women who agree that self-care is important but they have not yet aligned their actions to the self-care they desire.
I get it! I used to say, "After I do ______, then I'll take care of me." The problem is that there was always something to fill in the blank. When is the list ever done? It's not? There is always something to do and something to fill our time -- other than things that serve us. I find this especially true in the lives of entrepreneurs. We are the queens of "Let me do just one more thing!"
I wish I was exempt from this hamster wheel, but I am not. I have to be intentional when it comes to making time for my self-care. I am not perfect in this area by any means. But it is something that I am growing in and this growth has served me well! I hope you will join me on this journey!
Here are some things to try:
Set Boundaries: Establish clear work hours and stick to them. Ensure you have time for rest, family, and personal interests.
Schedule Quiet Time: Dedicate time each day for prayer, scripture reading, and reflection. This helps you stay grounded and focused on God’s purpose for your life.
Exercise Regularly: Physical activity boosts your energy levels and reduces stress. Find an exercise routine that you enjoy and can commit to regularly.
Eat Healthy Foods: Nourish your body with healthy foods that provide the energy and nutrients needed to sustain your busy lifestyle.
Get Adequate Sleep: Right now I am focusing on getting 7 hours of sleep each night. If you can get more, go for it! Good sleep is crucial for mental clarity and overall health.
Delegate Tasks: Learn to delegate tasks to others. You don’t have to do everything yourself. Trust your team (business) and family (home) and allow them to support you.
Take Breaks: Regular breaks during your workday can help you recharge and maintain productivity. Even a short walk or a few minutes of deep breathing can make a difference. Sometimes for me, it's stepping outside to get a little sunshine therapy.
Remember, self-care is not a luxury; it's a necessity, especially for Christian entrepreneurs. Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20), and we are called to steward them well. Neglecting self-care can lead to burnout, hinder our productivity, and negatively impact our spiritual lives. By prioritizing self-care, we honor God, improve our well-being, and become more effective in our work.
Dear God, thank You for guiding us in our entrepreneurial journeys and in our roles within our families. Help us to find harmony and to honor You in both areas of our lives. Give us the wisdom to prioritize, the strength to persevere, and the peace that comes from trusting in Your plan. In Jesus' name, Amen.
